City of Rocks and other stuff not quite cool enough to be considered National Parks

Scott and I have decided to plan summer trips to explore the sunny world of New Mexico. So, we decided to combine my birthday and Easter Weekend all into one (My birthday was on Easter Weekend so it wasn't really that hard!) Scott did a bunch of research and we decided to go camping at a site known as City of Rocks. Its this grouping of rocks in the middle of no where. You can set-up camp right in between them as shown below and to the right....

I thought the picture with the jeep in it looked like something from a jeep commercial, you
know...where they drive
right up on a mountain top and park and set up camp. Scott was so excited to get the jeep shot! Ha!

Scott and I enjoying the sun...and having fun in the rocks.
From City of Rocks we did day trips. First stop was the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Its a small scale version of Mesa Verde, not nearly as spectacular, but cool none the less. The Gila Cliff Dwellings offer a glimpse into the homes and lives of the Mogollon people who lived in this area over 700 yrs ago.
I think exploring ancient dwellings is amazing. We loved it!

Next stop on our day trip was called the "Catwalk." It truly was a little oasis in the middle of the desert. There was a suspended bridge that was over the river in a small slot canyon. I was amazed with the beauty especially because everything else is desert and looks dead!
That's me way down the trail. Pretty cool huh? Scott on suspension bridge. Slot canyon beauty!

Ivy and Lily were troopers on the trip. Ivy is creeping up the stair case on the catwalk (her better side). And look, Lily is smiling at you while she is wearing her pack. We make her carry the dog water, and it slows her down a bit! ;)
Desert Beauties. The cactus are in bloom!

  1. When I saw the title, I thought you had been to the City of Rocks in Idaho. Now I know where the other City of Rocks is.
